The Acute Demand programme is a Canterbury wide network of services designed to provide community-based care for patients either at risk of presentation to the Emergency Department, admission to hospital, or able to discharge home with advanced nurse assessments. 

The service is designed to:

  • Support and assist general practice teams to help patients who are acutely unwell to remain in their own home for their treatment.
  • Support newly diagnosed Heart Failure patients in the first few weeks to reduce re admission rates to hospital.
  • The service is aimed towards patients who have an acute episode of illness that may otherwise be admitted to hospital.

Pegasus Health 24 Hour Surgery is committed to providing a high quality, twenty-four hour service to the people of Christchurch from its site at 401 Madras Street. Operating for over 25 years, it is the preferred provider of after-hours care for most family doctors in Christchurch. 

Ko tāu ake mahi | What you will be doing

As an Acute Demand Registered Nurse, you will work within the Acute Demand Nursing Team delivering both community-based nursing care and treating patients in our clinic based at the 24-Hour Surgery. This position is for 32 hours per week. 

Your working day will vary as you:

  • Carry out comprehensive nursing assessments and care plans.
  • Deliver a range of interventions for patients with an acute episode of illness that would typically respond to treatment within 3-5 days. Such conditions may include cellulitis, urinary retention, respiratory illnesses, and Heart Failure.
  • Work collaboratively with the following teams: general practice, hospital, ambulance, and community services around short term care planning and available treatment options.
  • Confirm with the Acute Demand Liaison Nurses based in the hospital re supported discharge for appropriate patients.
  • Effectively communicate with team members, patients, and their family/whanau. Patient education and health promotion is pivotal to this role.

 Ko ngā pūkenga ōu | What you will bring

  • 5+ years’ experience as a Registered Nurse
  • To possess broad clinical skills across general practice, acute medicine, or urgent care
  • A high level of interpersonal, teamworking and communications skills
  • You will need to be adaptable and responsive, including the ability to think critically

All applicants must hold a current APC and NZNC Registration.
