Fixed Term 12 months (Full Time)
The Waitaha Canterbury Refugee Primary Care Service is a Primary care service funded by Te Whatu Ora, based in the Pegasus Health Refugee Health Service. The Service supports people and primary care teams Ōtautahi Christchurch and Hakatere Ashburton.
The team works in partnership with former refugee communities and resettlement organisations as well as other health services to deliver dedicated support to new former refugees and asylum seekers who have recently resettled in Canterbury.
This position is based at Pegasus Health, Christchurch.
What you will be doing
- Identify and address barriers to accessing primary care services and other health and wellbeing services for former refugees and asylum seekers resettling in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
- Support clients resettled in Christchurch to access the services and information they need to become independent.
- Given this is a mobile service, carrying out home and community visits to newly resettled families and providing support, advocacy and health information.
What you will bring
- Community work as a volunteer or in a professional role. For example: community work experience in health, social or other services for former refugees and/or migrants, involvement in religious or cultural association or informal group.
- Ideally: refugee life experience, bilingual or multilingual, able to communicate in particular in either Dari, Hazaragi, Tigrinya, Somali, Pashto, Nepali, Arabic or Farsi, Nepali or other African Asian or Middle Eastern languages.
- Ideally: Have existing relationships with one or more Waitaha Canterbury former refugee communities.
